Launch day spike, then silence: how to keep traffic coming
5 min read · Updated 20 September 2026
You launch. A wave of visitors arrives. Two days later, silence. This is the most common pattern in indie launches, and it has a clear cause.
Why the spike fades
Launch traffic is borrowed attention. It comes from a one-off event and disappears when the event ends. Nothing about it is repeatable.
Swap events for engines
The fix is to replace one-off events with engines that keep running: search, content, communities and referrals. Engines are slower to start and far better to own.
- Search: pages that answer questions people already ask
- Content: a steady drip of useful posts on 1 or 2 platforms
- Communities: helpful answers where your buyers gather
- Referrals: a simple reason for users to tell someone
Build the compounding layer first
A page that ranks keeps working while you sleep. A post that gets saved gets found again. Prioritise assets that compound over ones that vanish after 24 hours.
Track the right numbers
Ignore vanity totals. Watch where signups come from, which content earns them and how that changes week to week. That tells you where to double down.
